11 “And the smoke of their tormen is rising till onward of the times most immemorial of the times most immemorial².

 1. This torment happens on the earth when the followers of the beast are gathered up and destroyed by fire and brimstone, much like Sodom and Gomorrah. It is specifically limited to the worshippers of the beast. Further, the duration of the torment is as short as it takes the fire and brimstone to do its destructive work. What remains left over is the smoke (which implies the fire continues too) of the destruction which apparently because of the geologic nature of the event will continue for a long time.

 

 2. Mouse over “times most immemorial” to see the Greek and Hebrew behind it. The words have the sense exactly as translated—a very long time that its beginning or end are forgotten about from the human perspective. The actual length depends on the nature of subject, which in this case is the fire-smoke. A lot of people do not realize that smoke is still burning material. So if we say a fire is an “enduring fire” then it lasts a lot longer compared to a normal fire. The length is long, and its endpoint is hidden. Sodom and Gomorrah received the judgment of “enduring fire” (cf. Jude 1:7). Obviously they are not still burning. And obviously the people were killed long before the fire went out.

 

 3. This refers to those worshiping the beast before they are dead. It is stating the character of their worship, which has no Sabbath. They are enslaved to the beasts commercial system day and night without a rest. Satan uses his people up, and cares nothing for their comfort or rest and gives them none once they are deceived into giving him their irrevocable loyalty. The lack of a proper Sabbath is a fundamental difference between Yahweh’s Torah and the systems of Satan, which because they appeal to man’s greed undermine any attempt at a real Sabbath.

 

 a. The commandments give the soul rest, because the one doing them is not in a state of guilt. The worshippers of the beast will have no rest for their souls because they will be transgressing in a perpetual state of guilt.

 1. The NASB and KJV contain the word “are” here. This is improper. The Greek verb is singular ἐστιν = “is”. As the Greek and the Hebrew original (Revelation shows every sign of coming from a Hebrew vorlague) have a choice between a verb that takes a singular subject and a verb that takes a plural subject) it is clear that the text is representing a singular subject. This also indicates that the conjunction is explanatory. See note 2.

 

 2. The Greek word καὶ corresponds to Hebrew ו. The context is indicative of a visible representation of the Almighty, and so it is best to comprehend the Son as the object of this verse (cf. John 1:18). Accordingly the conjunction should be understood as explanatory. This usage is illustrated in BDB under waw and in BDAG under kai. It does not correspond to the English “and”. This usage is glossed “b. and in particular, and that” (BDB) or “5. explanatory: and indeed, namely” (Holladay). BDB lists several example passages Gen 4:4; Jud. 7:22; 1Sam 17:40, 28:3; 2 Sam 13:20, etc. In order to be observationally convinced of this usage it is necessary to study these passages in Hebrew. For Greek BDAG lists similar glosses under “oft. explicative; and so, that is, namely. The NAS and YLT translate “even through” in Judges 7:22. Gal. 6:16 shows this usage, “even upon the Israel of the Almighty”.

 

23 And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine upon it, for the glor of the Almĩghty lights it, eve its lamp is the Lamb.
