Daniel's Literal Translation and Commentary

The Renewed Covenant by Daniel Gregg

"Luke 6:1 And it happened on the second-first Sabbath, He passed along through the fields.  And his disciples plucked the heads, and were eating, rubbing with the hands" (DLT: torahtimes.org).

comment: there were two first Sabbaths.  The first day of unleavened bread was called "the Sabbath" (cf. Lev. 23:11, 15), and so it was the first Sabbath of Passover week.  However, after the annual Sabbath, seven Sabbaths were also counted in the 49 days following the Passover (cf. Lev. 23:15).   One of the ways to distinguish between them was to call the second one the "second-first Sabbath" (Luke 6:1).   Matthew 28:1 makes the distinction by calling the weekly Sabbath the "Later of the Sabbaths".  John 19:31 specifies the annual Sabbath as "a high day" to mark it off from the following weekly Sabbath.   In Hebrew, the distinction is made by השבת הראשונית, and אחת השבתות respectively.   The eating of the new grain on the first Sabbath after Passover also, incidentally disproves the Sadducees' method of counting the days to Shavuot after the weekly Sabbath because it was forbidden to eat the new grain until the sheaf was waved.   Evidently the sheaf had been waved earlier, because the disciples were eating the new grain.
