Was the Plesiosaur really a decayed Basking Shark?

Kuban argues that the decayed remains were really a Basking Shark.  (1) The Protein analysis was similar to that of a shark, but scientists say that such a result is meaningless since such similarities abound. (2) Those familiar with basking sharks deny that the 'sea monster' was a basking shark.

This extract of a message board is by the fair use rule, and seeks to demonstrate a point.  People familar with Basking Sharks deny that the Japanese dredged up a Basking Shark.  The cited message is typical.

I saw a documentary on sea serpents and lake monsters and they showed the picture of this "basking shark". That carcass looked more like an unknown creature with a long neck and a large body with four distinguishible flippers attached to it. Although I am not an expert on this subject, I'm convinced that is was a dead specimen of some type of sea creature we have not discovered yet.
